Thanks to an offensive outburst, the Winnipeg Goldeyes have begun their climb back up to .500. A four RBI night by Ray Sadler helped the Goldeyes to a 12-2 win over the Trois-Rivieres Aigles on Tuesday, snapping a three game losing streak in the process. Josh Mazzola had a three-for-five night at the plate with three RBI for the Goldeyes, who improved to 26-29 on the season. Seven of the nine Goldeyes offensive starters collected at least one hit. "One guy cant do everything so you have to have contributions from everybody in your lineup," said Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea on the TSN 1290 postgame show. Tyler Graham began the scoring when he scored on a wild pitch in the first to put the Goldeyes up 1-0. Trois-Rivieres threatened that lead early but Winnipeg starter Matt Rusch pitched out of jams in the first two innings to preserve the score. In the third, Rusch was one pitch away from getting out of another jam but he surrendered a two-out RBI single to Brett Flowers and the Aigles tied it at one. The scoring remained quiet until the sixth when the Goldeyes grabbed the lead back. Fehlandt Lentini led off with a triple and he was driven in when Sadler hit a single that got past a drawn-in Aigles infield. Winnipeg extended that lead to 3-1 in the inning on a Mazzola RBI double that brought home Sadler. The Goldeyes blew it open in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Sadler drove a ball off the bottom of the outfield wall. When the play was finished, three runs had scored and Sadler stood at second base as the Goldeyes now led 6-1. They scored twice more in the inning off a Mazzola single to open up a seven run lead. "We had a big inning put on us last night so it was nice to come out and do the same to them," said Vermilyea. "The guys were feeling it at the plate and they were putting the barrel on the ball to get some key hits." The Aigles scored once in the eighth but Winnipeg capped off the night with a four-run ninth, highlighted by a two run single from Luis Alen. Rusch, pitching on three days rest, went five-and-two-thirds innings to collect the victory. He gave up only one run while striking out six. The win is the first by a Goldeyes starter since Justin Garcia was victorious on July 5, a span of nine games. "I thought he threw fairly well," said Vermilyea. "I liked how he was being aggressive with his fastball early. He was establishing that fastball and keeping guys honest at the plate." Jeff Schields took the loss for the Aigles. He went six-and-a-third innings, giving up six earned runs on eight hits. He struck out one while walking three Goldeyes. Winnipeg goes for the series win on Wednesday night at 6pm ct. Pete Gehle will get the start for the Goldeyes while Trois-Rivieres will counter with Garrett Bullock. The action starts with the pre-game show on TSN 1290 at 5:30 p.m. with play-by-play voice Paul Edmonds. Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Discount . 10 VCU 85-67 on Thursday night at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. I dont think I have to tell you the first team is the Pirates and the second is the Blue Jays. In Sundays games, both teams played 11 inning marathons. The Blue Jays lost their starter in the bottom of the third inning, 40-year-old Ramon Ortiz, to an elbow injury that could be career-ending. The Pirates lost their starter, Jeanmar Gomez, to forearm tightness after he gave up four runs in the first inning. Down early, both teams rallied for dramatic victories; the Jays beating the Padres on the road, 7-4, with veteran utility man Mark DeRosa putting the Jays ahead for keeps with a homer leading off the 11th. The Pirates got a mammoth home run from Garrett Jones that travelled an estimated 463 feet and became just the second ball to land in the Allegheny River on the fly. That blast sent the game into extra innings. Then, ex-Jay Travis Snider singled home the winning run in walk-off style in the 11th. The Blue Jays bullpen and the Pirates pen were both outstanding. Six Blue Jays relievers gave up just two singles in nine scoreless innings in relief of Ortiz. Pittsburghs pen was equally good against the Reds, as five of their relievers combined to pitch 10 scoreless innings after picking up for Gomez. At the end of the day, the Pirates were still tied for second with Cincinnati in the NL Central, with each club sitting at 35-22 and each holding a Wild Card position. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, are still wallowing in last place in the AL East at 24-33, and they are eight games behind Baltimore for the second Wild Card slot with over a third of the season gone. The Blue Jays have out-homered Pittsburgh 72-55 and outscored them by 40 runs - 254 to 214. In fact, the Pirates offensive numbers are just this side of abysmal. They are 22nd in the Majors in runs scored, 25th in batting average, 23rd in on base percentage and 23rd in slugging percentage. The Jays bullpen has been a strength on the team this season, but the Pirates has been even better. Jason Grilli, getting his first real chance to close in his mid-30s, has an incredible 22 saves. The set-up man, Mark Melancon, who came over from Boston in the deal for the Pirates old closer, Joel Hanrahan (whos injured and out for the season), has a 0.93 earned run average. The Pirates pitchers as a whole have a glittering 3.12 ERA and have the second most strikeouts in the Majors. Yet, the Pirates rotation doesnt blow you away with big names. While the Blue Jays added the likes of R..dddddddddddd Dickey, Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle in the offseason, the Pirates went the bargain basement route and picked up Francisco Liriano, Jeanmar Gomez and Francisco Liriano and were paid dividends with the continued devotement of lefty Jeff Locke, who came over in a June 3rd, 2009 deal with Atlanta, along with Gorkys Hernandez and Charlie Morton for outfielder Nate McLouth, whos now with Baltimore. Locke is 5-1 with a 2.25 ERA. You can point to the Blue Jays starting rotation, where only Dickey and Buehrle have avoided time on the DL this season and says the club has been ravaged by injuries, for the 2nd year running. However the Pirates have problems with their rotation as well. Jonathan Sanchez, was a disaster out of the gate. He went (0-3) and was cut loose. Liriano got a late start after breaking his arm around Christmas time, while pranking his kids in a stunt that went awry. James McDonald is on the DL and rehabbing a shoulder injury and now Jeanmar Gomez has the same sort of forearm issue thats put Brandon Morrow on the disable list for the Blue Jays. There are those who suggest the Pirates are doing it with smoke and mirrors. They point to the clubs record at the mid-point of the last two seasons, 47-43 in 2011 and 48-37 in 2012, and the subsequent collapses in the second halves of both seasons as evidence it will happen again this year. The critics may be right, but the Buccos ERA at this point is about a third of a run better than it was mid-way through last season - 3.12 to 4.47 - and if anything, they should be battle-hardened by whats happened the last two seasons. The Giants, Washington and maybe even Colorado all have the talent to take a run at Pittsburgh, but there just seems to be something special about this team; a team that hasnt finished about .500 or in the postseason since 1992. The Blue Jays, sitting nine games under .500, will have to go 16-10 or 17-9 in June to have any hope of getting back into the Wild Card hunt in the American League. Ortiz is on his way to Florida to get an MRI on his elbow. If this is indeed the end of his Major League career, it ended on an unusual note. In the second inning against the Padres, he gave up a three-run homer to Padres starter Edinson Volquez. It was the first home run of Volquezs career and the first-round tripper ever given up by Ortiz to a pitcher in 3-3 career games. The Blue Jays are 5-4 in inter-league play so far, 3-1 at home and 2-3 on the road under, heading into a two-game set with the Giants starting Tuesday night at San Francisco. Josh Johnson returns from his rehab stint to make the start in the series open. Johnson is still in search of his first victory as a member of the Blue Jays. ' ' '

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Russia was stripped of another track and field medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Friday after three athletes were retroactively caught in drug tests, the latest blow to a country reeling from scandals over widespread doping.Russia lost its silver medal in the womens 4x400 relay after Anastasiya Kapachinskaya tested positive for the steroids stanozol and turinabol in a reanalysis of her samples, the International Olympic Committee said. Its the second 2008 relay medal stripped this week from Russia because of doping. On Tuesday, the IOC took away Russias gold in the 4x100 after Yulia Chermoshanskaya tested positive for the same two steroids.Under international rules, an entire relay team loses its medals if one of the runners tests positive. With Kapachinskayas positive, Jamaica is in line to move up from third to silver and Belarus from fourth to bronze in the 4x400 relay.Kapachinskaya was also disqualified from her fifth-place finish in the individual 400 meters. In the two other cases announced Friday, Alexander Pogorelov tested positive for turinabol and was stripped of his fourth-place finish in the decathlon, and Ivan Yushkov had his 10th-place result in tthe shot put annulled after he tested positive for stanozolol, turinabol and oxandrolone.ddddddddddddThe three drugs are all traditional steroids that go back decades. Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson tested positive for stanozolol at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where he was stripped of the gold medal in the 100 meters. The IOC stores doping samples for 10 years so they can be retested when improved methods become available. Using enhanced techniques, the IOC has retested more than 1,000 doping samples from the Beijing Games and 2012 London Olympics to catch cheats who evaded detection at the time. A total of 98 athletes have been caught. For the Beijing and London retests, the IOC used a method that can detect use of steroids going back weeks and months, rather than days.Fridays decision was another black eye for Russia, whose track and field team was banned from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics over allegations of state-sponsored doping. Investigations are continuing into wider systematic doping in Russia involving dozens of other summer and winter Olympic sports. ' ' '

Sussex 291 for 6 (Joyce 92, Archer 60*, Jordan 59*) trail Essex 358 (ten Doeschate 83, Lawrence 65, Jordan 4-99, Archer 3-84) by 67 runs Scorecard There Luke Wright was, wandering slowly from the field, strangled down the leg-side off David Masters, the sixth of six wickets to fall for just 49. Harry Finch, with a broken thumb, would only bat if absolutely required, so Wrights big plan to haul Sussex back into the game looked in tatters, with just the bowlers left to bat. That plan, for the first half of the day, had been going so well. First thing, Chris Jordan, a little luckless yet also a wee bit wayward on day one, bowled with verve and pace to dock Essexs meek tail, picking up four wickets for five runs, as just 21 was added to the overnight score. Then, for an hour each side of lunch, Ed Joyce batted with grace and class in the company of the more watchful Chris Nash to reach 124 without loss. Barely a bat was beaten, hardly an appeal uttered in anger. Joyce was in total control; he drove with precision, flicked crisply to leg and cut and pulled with elegance. When 100 came up, he had 72 and a fourth Championship century of the season - and 46th in first-class cricket (it is his stated aim to reach 50 this season) - seemed a formality. Nash, capable of scoring at such a lick, blocked away in awe. Then, unplanned, came afternoon drinks. On a warm afternoon, Essexs fielders were beginning to look beleaguered - and perhaps beguiled by Joyce - regrouped. The tight line, and perhaps a little nip, of Masters, with the first over of the break, caught Nash napping, and James Foster took a fine catch low to his right. Next over, Luke Wells appeared to nick off to Graham Napier, but - with Essex incredulous and fielders delivering a volley of abuse to the batsman - the umpire adjudged it was arm, not bat. It mattered not, as next ball Wells pulled a bumper straight to fine leg. Send-offs - needless to say - followed.Another couple of overs on and it was Joyce out hooking, while David Wiese came and went for a breezy 13, which included two fine straight drives, before he edged the impressive Tom Moore - who sage judges in these parts say is playing for his future at Essex - to the lone slip. After tea, Wrights wicket immediately followed that of Ben Brown, through his stroke early and caught at mid-on, and 124 for 0 had become 173 for 6.Then Jofra Archer, who bowled with such promise on day one, joined his mentor - and the man who arranged for him to come from their native Barbados and play in southern England, Chris Jordan, in the middle. While they made a scratchy start, they both settled and, on a pitch with wonderful carry, the Essex seamers - Ryan ten Doeschate appears to have inherited his clubmate Alastair Cooks distrust of spinners - tired once more.Jordan and Archer - which sounds rather like a Hello! magazine cover in the noughties - went tit for tat. Jordan pulled beautifully on the front foot so Archer - who enjoyed the majority of the strike - handsomely cover drove, before standing tall to wallop Porter for six over square-leg. They moved to 50 in consecutive balls in Dan Lawrences solitary over and, by stumps, the partnership - all stylish, swashbuckling fare - was worth 118, and the lead had been eroded to just 67. Wright neednt have looked so hangdog after all.Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, enthused their coach, Mark Davis, we had got ourselves in a really good position through the openers, and from there, you hope to have a proper day with the bat, and get 500. But that didnt prove to be, we lost a few, then those two came together - what an amazing partnership, and it got us back in the game.Jofra came in in a tricky situation but is a pretty fearless cricketer with bat and ball. Hes not fazed by the occasion, or by playing his first few games in this country. You cant really instill that in players. Hes not just a bowler, hes an allrounder and we are really excited to have him in our ranks. Hes had a great week, hes very driven and is quick learner. CJ knows him very well, hes the one who got him over in the first place, they know each other well. Hes always said how good he is. He could be a superstar for us.Jordans excellence with the bat - and as a leader, too, perhaps - was matched by his early showing with the ball. Ashar Zaidi had one too many swish and was caught behind, while nightwatchman Porter was trapped plumb in front. Masters nick made it four in 13 balls, then Moores stumps went flying. With the dangerous Napier, playing his final game on his home ground, left stranded, Jordan - not for the last time - had got his team out of trouble. Much more work lies ahead for Jordan, but thanks in large part to he and Archer, a thrilling contest awaits. Richard Sherman Super Bowl Jersey . New Zealand 203 Australia 63A cricket score? No, the final points tally of Trans-Tasman duels on one of the most demoralising weekends experienced by Australian teams in the history of the Super Rugby competition. If four bewildering, and in several cases downright embarrassing losses is not enough to send Australian rugby fans around the twist, the only local team not confronting a New Zealand rival over the last few days just added to the despair.More bafflement as the Western Force continue to show they are hovering near the basket case category- with off-field shenanigans followed by only scant resistance against the Stormers to finish their home season with zero victories in Perth.Admittedly numerous Australian provinces have lost their way in South Africa, with the Waratahs and Brumbies involved in their own infamous off-field moments, while Wallabies tourists have been forced to send players home for misbehaving.Still at a delicate period in the Forces history- where the Australian Rugby Union have taken over their finances, coach Michael Foley sacked for under-achieving, and many seriously questioning whether it is worth persevering with a province in Perth- it was not the perfect time for it to be revealed how they lost their way in Bloemfontein. As the Australian Super Rugby thrashings continued on through Friday and Saturday, the Australian Rugby Union issued a media release which named Test player Dane Haylett-Petty as the person who urinated in the hallway of the Southern Sun hotel in Bloemfontein, while a past Wallaby, Pek Cowan had driven the team bus without permission. Both were fined $5000 from these incidents which occurred when the players had a big night on the town, broke curfews and were involved in scuffles after losing 30-29 to the Cheetahs. That these mishaps took so long to be revealed showed there is something seriously amiss at the core of the Force organisation. For a considerable amount of time, that province has needed an enormous shake-up, and hopefully the ARU can achieve that.Even more exasperating is that at a time when after England came, saw, conquered and spat out the Wallabies in a three-Test series, the belief of the local support base has been further undermined by the New Zealand provinces brutally showing how far behind their Australian counterparts are.In terms of basic skills, depth in numbers, planning and most importantly intelligence, Australian teams come nowhere near the New Zealand brand. They are not on the same page, a disconcerting sign with a Bledislloe Cup series starting in six weeks.dddddddddddd.As during the England Test series, Australian players- at both international and provincial level- continually confound you in showing how dumb they can be. Their tactics are often misguided, constantly playing into the hands of their opponents, as is their failure to adapt. Their belief also has to be questioned. On the weekend, you had two teams fighting for a confirmed finals berth by finishing top of the Australian conference- and one (the Brumbies) were strangely listless while the other (the Waratahs) just wasted chance after chance. It was as if neither actually had their heart and soul into becoming number one. The level of hunger, in particular by the Brumbies, has to be questioned. The Waratahs showed considerable pluck, but in the big moments were too frazzled, too loose and too disjointed to make a proper impact. There were too many errors. Too many penalties. The Hurricanes also outsmarted them. They made certain that the play was directed away from their biggest threat- Israel Folau- and so his impact was minimal. The first time you were reminded that Folau was actually playing was when early in the second half he danced and pranced around five Hurricanes defenders to score and give the Waratahs the lead. Then he became a spectator again, and the Hurricanes shot away.Elsewhere the Australian provinces were little more than cardboard cut-outs. The Brumbies forgot how to tackle; the Reds were clueless, the Rebels looked lost- and so suffered diabolical losses- 25, 45 and 59 points respectively. Its no wonder that at times watching these often loopy encounters felt like sheer torture. Sometimes you had to look away, or slap yourself to be convinced that it was actually real.So only one Australian team can make the finals cut, a barren outcome when compared to four New Zealand teams and three South African sides which will be part of the title charge. Unless there is a dramatic transformation, you would not expect the Australian sole finals representative- most likely to be the Brumbies- to be hanging around for that long either. As Australian Rugby once again hits rock bottom, the natural instinct is to convince yourself that it can only get better... because surely it cant get any worse. For that transformation to occur depends so much on whether Wallabies coach Michael Cheika can prove he is the master resuscitator. Unbeaten and 16th-ranked South Carolina will be without its best player when it takes on Seton Hall on Monday in the Under Armour Reunion at Madison Square Garden.Senior forward Sindarius Thornwell was suspended indefinitely by Gamecocks coach Frank Martin last week. Thornwell leads South Carolina in scoring, rebounds and assists.Martin described the reason for Thornwells suspension as a mental mistake and said the senior would travel with the team to New York, but would not play. No timetable for Thonwells return has been announced. He will do everything other than play in the game, Martin told reporters. Thats important. Sometimes, you miss time because of ankle injury, a knee injury, a pulled hamstring. You cant allow an injury to deprive your team of becoming who its supposed to be. ... This is a mental injury. He made a mental mistake. Its the same deal. Hes fine and Sins earned my respect and my trust for who he is. Junior guard Khadeen Carrington leads the Pirates, averaging 20.0 points per game. Carrington scored 17 or more points in eight of nine games this season and is shooting 55.3 percent from 3-point range. Junior forward Desi Rodriguez (14.6 points) and freshman guard Myles Powell (12.6) also are averaging double figures for the balanced Pirates.Without Thornwell, the Gamecocks will need senior guards Duane Notice and Justin McKie to step up.Sophomore guard P.J. Dozier is having a breakout year for South Carolina. Dozier is averaging 12.8 points and 4.5 rebounds for the Gamecocks. We like to prepare our team to depend on who we are, not to be dependent on a player, Martin said. Where things get dicey is not one guy is going to step in and be Sindarius. What a wonderful opportunity for others to step forward and embrace more responsibility, Martin added. Thats only going to make us a stronger team moving forward.South Carolina has been impressive this season and already posted wins over Michigan and Syracuse. The Gamecocks (8-0) also started hot last season, winning their first 15 games. But South Carolina stumbled down the stretch and ended up being left out of the NCAA tournament. The Pirates won last years Big East tournament, knocking off eventual national champion Villanova in the conference tournament title game. They reached the NCAA tournament, but were eliminated in the first round by Gonzaga.South Carolina and Seton Hall will be the second game of a doubleheader at Madison Square Garden. Auburn and Boston College will battle in the first game.Mondays meeting is only the second all-time game between the Pirates and Gamecocks. COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Texas A&M began the second half of its Southeastern Conference schedule with a 25-20, 25-18, 25-19 victory over South Carolina today at the Carolina Volleyball Center. It was the eighth victory over the last nine matches for the Aggies, who improve to 14-7 overall and 8-2 in SEC matches. South Carolina falls to 15-7, including 3-7 in SEC play.Texas A&M All-American and redshirt senior middle blocker Jazzmin Babers tied for match-high honors with 12 kills while hitting .524 as the Aggies outhit the Gamecocks, .317 to .167 for the match. Junior outside hitter Kiara McGee pitched in 11 kills while hitting at a .320 clip, and freshman outside hitter Hollann Hans also reached double-figure kills with 10 while junior setter Stephanie Aiple distributed 34 assists.Sophomore middle blocker Kaitlyn Blake, who leads the SEC in blocks per set, led the Aggies with four blocks, and Babers added three to give her 449 block assists for her career and move her within seven block assists of the school all-time career record of 456 held by Cindy Lothspeich (1994-97).Senior defensive specialist Victoria Arenas took match-high honors in digs with 16, and junior libero Amy Nettles had eight digs, putting her within 18 of the 1,000-career digs milestone.Texas A&M led the first set from start to finish, building its largest advantage at 16-8 following back-to-back errors by the Gamecocks. South Carolina, which was outhit .433 to .297 in the frame, later used a 3-0 run to get within 20-17 before McGee caromed a kill off the block to thwart the Gamecocks rally. The teams began to trade points before McGee put down her fifth kill and Babers and Aiple followed with a block to put the Aggies at set point. South Carolina got a kill to stave off one set point before Babers attack near the right-side pin ricocheted off the Gamecocks block for the set-ending kill.South Carolina took its first lead of the match by scoring the first two points to begin the second set. Aiple later set up McGee and Babers for back-to-back kills that gave A&M the lead, 4-3, and the Aggies would never trail for the remainder of the set. South Carolina tied the score at 4- and 5-all before A&M went on a 6-1 run to go up, 11-6. The Gamecocks then scored three unanswered points to get within 11-9 before Hans ended the rally with a kill, marking the start of a 5-0 spurt by the Aggies. South Carolina never got closer than five points for the reminder of the set and trailed 20-14 when McGee and Hans posted back-to-back kills, and sophomore defensive specialist Amy Houser followed with her second of a career-high three aces in the match to put A&M up, 23-14. The Aggies took their largest lead on the next play as South Carolina had an attack error that put Texas A&M at set point, 24-14. The Gamecocks, who were outhit, .306 to .079 in the stanza, made a late rally, fighting off four set points before Hans closed out the set with a kill. The Aggies held an 11-9 lead in the third set when South Carolina gained the momentum, putting down three consecutive kills, including a kill after a lengthy rally to build a 12-10 lead. The home teams momentum quickly fizzled as the Gamecocks served long, and the Aggies took over with Houser stepping to the service line. A&M ran its scoring streak to eight consecutive points, with Babers contributing three kills during the surge. A service error temporarily ended the run, but Hans got a kill off the block to begin a 3-0 run that put the Aggies up, 22-13.The teams traded points, with A&M senior setter Kaysie Shebeneck entering the match for Aiple aand immediately setting up Blake for a kill that gave the Aggies a 23-14 lead.dddddddddddd South Carolina then made a last-ditch effort, rallying to get within 23-18, forcing A&M to call a timeout.Following the timeout, Shebeneck once again set up Blake for the kill to put the Aggies at match point. Dessaa Legros put down her team-leading 12th kill to keep the Gamecocks alive, but Blake and Emily Hardesty teamed for a block on the ensuing play to clinch the victory for the Aggies. For the match, Texas A&M led the Gamecocks in kills (48-24), assists (45-33), aces (5-4) and digs (50-34). South Carolina led in blocks, 9-7, marking the first time in six matches this season that A&M came out victorious despite trailing in blocks.Texas A&M returns home to Reed Arena on Thursday for a rematch against Alabama, which handed the Aggies a 3-2 loss in the SEC season opener in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The match, which begins at 6 p.m., marks the start of a season-high four-match homestand, which also includes contests against Tennessee (Nov. 6), Mississippi State (Nov. 11) and Georgia (Nov. 13).HEAD COACH LAURIE CORBELLI: On getting the sweep to start the second half of the conference schedule...It was really a fun team win. The focus from the beginning was really good. The big concern in this gym has always been our passing, and the team settled in and did a really nice job of passing. I thought the blocking today was really well formed and well timed, and it made our defense behind the block a lot smoother and a lot better. So overall, both from an offensive and defensive standpoints, it was one of our better performances. On getting out of Columbia in 3 sets instead of going 5 sets like A&M has done in the last two visits... I told the team after the match that this is maybe one of the most stressful places I have ever coached in the SEC. It is such a tough place to play, and they play so great at home. I was so relieved that we were able to close it out in three sets. I sat on the bench in the third set thinking Im probably going to cry at the end of this one because Im so relieved. They are ones of those teams that just plays so beautifully at home, and we were able to just contain what we wanted to contain and really get our side going. And we had much better serving than we have had lately, so I do think our serving is getting better. On hosting Alabama, which upset A&M in five sets in the SEC opener... That opening match against Alabama is a sore spot for us, and it is our chance to take another step towards our goal, and it is our chance to get a little bit of revenge, not that revenge is that huge because we know we just have to perform. It will be tough; there is no question. We match up with them really well, but it is always a battle. I think the team sees the goal is a little closer, and I think that the motivation is coming back around from them to being we made it through the rough stretch of the season and we are on the home stretch. They feel lighter. They feel like there is a really strong purpose; it is not as distant. We survived October for the most part, so now to be home, this early November is going to be really fun and really good for us.On starting a four-match homestand in front of the 12th Man It will be nice to have our home crowd know that we will be back in a few nights. We will be returning soon instead of in two weeks. Hopefully we can get some momentum going there, as well as with our fans. ' ' '
WASHINGTON -- After Kemba Walkers potentially tying 3-point try went around the rim and out at the buzzer of the Charlotte Hornets third consecutive loss, the star guard and coach Steve Clifford agreed on this: The team needs to be more physical.Sooner or later, weve got to respond. We have to respond as a group or its not going to get better, Clifford said. Im sick of watching it, frankly.John Wall and Bradley Beal combined for 19 of their 45 points in the third quarter, and the Wizards outrebounded the Hornets while scoring twice as many points in the paint during Washingtons 109-106 victory over the Southeast Division leaders Wednesday night. Its the lack of physicality overall. I just told them that. I love our guys, but listen: We got knocked around ... again tonight, Clifford said. If guys arent willing to be more physical, were going to be an up-and-down team. Well struggle to make the playoffs. You have to change -- no matter how old you are, how many years youve been in the league.Told of his coachs assessment, Walker said: He sees it all. Hes watching the whole game. So hes right.Charlotte is 0-3 to start a five-game road trip after losses at Cleveland on Saturday, then at Indiana on Monday.Against Washington, the Hornets led by as many as 10 early in the third quarter, then trailed by as many as 12, but made things interesting at the end.The Hornets pulled within two points after Marco Belinelli stole the ball from Wall, leading to Cody Zellers layup with 10.6 seconds remaining. Wall made one of two free throws a second later for a three-point lead, before Nicolas Batum and Walker both missed 3s that would have tied it.After Batums miss, Walker got the rebound and moved out beyond the arc to launch his shot, which came oh-so-close to going in at the buzzer.Beal said afterward he was a little nervous, Im not going to lie, because he had a solid look.TIP-INSHornets: Batum scored 20 points on his 28th birthday. Wall became the teams career leader in assists earlier this season. He wants to be the best at everything he does, Beal said of his backcourt mate.BIG QUARTERWashington eclipsed its season high for points in a quarter during the third, outscoring Charlotte 38-23 in that period, including a 23-5 run.BEALS DEALBeal, 0 for 6 in the first half, scored 11 points in the third. LONDON -- Milos Raonic is as good a server as there is in tennis nowadays.Andy Murray is one of the top returners. How that matchup plays out in the Wimbledon final Sunday could go a long way toward determining who wins the championship. The sixth-seeded Raonic heads into the first Grand Slam title match of his career -- and the first for a man representing Canada -- having won 116 of his 121 service games (96 percent) across six matches.Obviously, said Murray, the 2013 Wimbledon champion, Milos has got a fantastic serve.Raonic, who added John McEnroe to his coaching staff ahead of the grass-court portion of this season, has hit 154 aces, averaging 25 1/2 per match. Hes faced only 27 break points, saving 22.In his five-set victory over Roger Federer in the semifinals, Raonic saved 8 of 9 break points. Not only did the 6-foot-5 Raonic repeatedly top 140 mph in that match, he went as high as 144 mph more than once, and his average first serve of 129 mph was faster than Federers best offering of 126 mph.Raonics serve is speedy and scary, to be sure -- British Davis Cup captain Leon Smith called it ginormous -- but it is also much more than that. One reason its so effective is because of his ability to alter velocity and placement.Against Federer, he would boom one right at the body at upward of 135 mph -- emanating a thud that reverberated around Centre Court -- then hit an ace out wide at 115 mph that sent up a spray of chalk when it hit a line. You dont get in a rhythm, said Sam Querrey, the American who lost to Raonic in the quarterfinals after beating No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the third round. You go games on his serve where you might get one return in play.Dont count on that happening too often against Murray.Take out players who didnt make it past the second round this fortnight, and the second-seeded Murray ranks No. 1 in:- percentage of returns put in play, 77;- percentage of second-serve points won, 64;- percentage of return games won, 36.Murray -- a two-time major champion, most famously becoming the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years -- has won his past five matchups against Raonic. Just three weeks ago, Murray won their meeting in the final of the Queens Club grass-court tournament. Murray dropped the first set, then trailed 3-0 in the second, before beginning the turnaround with a return winner. It helps to have played a match against him on the grass, Murray said. You know, see some of the things hes doing on this surface a little bit differently. For Murray, this will be the 11th Grand Slam final of his career -- and third of this year -- but first against someone other than Djokovic or Federer.Raonic was asked what sort of a boost his debut in a major final might be for Canadian tennis. Its great to sort of be at the center and front of that come Sunday. Im glad that Ive sort of been leading this charge, the first one to break through and really put these things together, he said. But Im by no means done. Both times Murray earned a major trophy, Ivan Lendl was his coach. And after a hiatus, they have reunited.I dont think its a coincidence. I obviously had the best years of my career with him, Murray said.I obviously wanted to work with Ivan again to try to help me win these events, he added. Thats the goal. One of eight-time major champion Lendls rivals during his playing days was McEnroe, who won three of his seven Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon. Lendl won 21 of their 36 head-to-head matchups, although McEnroe won the only time they played at the All England Club, in the 1983 semifinals.Lendl is expected to be seated in Murrays guest box at Centre Court for the final. Romelu Lukaku did the damage against his former club, breaking the deadlock on Saturday night with a stunning individual strike before putting the tie beyond Chelsea with a second in a frantic final 13 minutes, which also saw Diego Costa and Gareth Barry sent off.So, from Lukaku haunting his former employers to Chelseas season reaching an abrupt end, we ponder five talking points from the game... Lukaku haunts Chelsea Romelu Lukaku celebrates after opening the scoring When Chelsea decided to sell Lukaku - a player who had made just 15 Blues appearances - to Everton in 2014 for £28m, many questioned their reasoning. However, after an inconsistent debut season at Goodison Park, at the end of which Chelsea won a fourth Premier League title, their decision appeared justified.Diego Costa scored with consummate ease last term as Chelsea cantered to the title, but fast forward 12 months and things are very different.Lukakus prolific form this term has coincided with Chelseas capitulation, and their former player dealt the fatal, and arguably most painful, blow to their season with the two match-winning goals on Saturday. His first goal showed exactly how far he has progressed since the Stamford Bridge shackles were let loose.Sumptuous control, strength, pace and agility were all on display as he sent Everton on their way to Wembley in stunning fashion, leaving a trail of smarting Chelsea players lying in his wake.Costa up to old tricks Costa was involved in a number of bust-ups at Goodison Park In recent weeks, weve been treated to Diego Costa at his brilliant best - intensity, directness and, importantly for Chelsea, goals. He treads a fine line when he takes to the field but several incidents at Goodison suggest he crossed that line. The Spaniard reverted back to his old petulant self after being on the receiving end of a painful looking challenge from Gareth Barry on eight minutes. He sought retribution immediately, colliding with the Toffees midfielder to earn his first booking of the game. As referee Michael Oliver brandished the card, Costa spat on the ground near to the official. Costa in bite controversy Diego Costa could face retrospective action after appearing to try and bite Evertons Gareth Barry. He couldnt get the chip off his shoulder, as the rest of his first half was strewn with theatrical appeals for free-kicks and confrontations with opposition players. The half-time break momentarily calmed Costa down, with the striker coming close to breaking the deadlock when his low effort from an acute angle flashed across the face of goal. But things reared to a head once the visitors slipped two goals behind, with Barry in the firing line again. Costa was issued a second yellow for appearing to throw his head towards Barry, who refreshingly did not react, before motioning to bite him on his neck.Costa was extremely unhappy after a challenge from Barry. He has got to control his temper, Peter Taylor, who covered the game on Sky Sports News HQ said.He went in with his chest first, then his face and it looked as though he was thinkingg about biting him.dddddddddddd You cannot be clear if he did bite him, his lips were on his neck... but its not clear. Barry later denied Costa had bitten him.Money well spent? Everton major investor Farhad Moshiri (L) and chairman Bill Kenwright (R) on Saturday Evertons new majority shareholder, Farhad Moshiri, attended his first game at Goodison Park after the Premier League approved his 49.9% share purchase earlier this week - and, on early indication, it looks like money well spent. The British-Iranian investor was on hand to oversee his new side seal their place in a lucrative semi-final at Wembley, and move to within one win of a reappearance in the showpiece final.Hell have no doubt enjoyed the Toffees ability to go toe-to-toe with the champions in a feisty, ill-tempered encounter.Evertons hopes of growing as a club will boil down to their ability to fight on the pitch as well as off it.Saturdays victory proved they can mix it with the best. Could the collaboration with their new shareholder see them do so more consistently?Chelseas dismal season ends Diego Costa walks off the pitch past Guus Hiddink after his red card Hiddinks first spell at Chelsea ended with an FA Cup triumph over Everton in 2009. Seven years on, and despite having nine league games remaining, defeat at Goodison effectively ends their disappointing campaign. As he did in his first spell at Stamford Bridge, the Dutchman has clearly steadied the ship following his second appointment as interim manager.Defeat at home to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League in midweek saw the Blues hopes of silverware rest in the FA Cup, but they were unable to keep such aspirations alive. The reverse on Merseyside saw the Blues eliminated in the quarter-final for the first time since 2007/08, when Barnsley knocked them out en route to the semi-finals, as Hiddink suffered his first defeat in the competition. If they havent already, thoughts will now turn to next season, a season where Chelsea, at present, will have to do without Hiddink, John Terry, European football and any trophies in the cabinet.Martinez answering critics in cup Roberto Martinez responded to recent criticism with another FA Cup clean sheet Roberto Martinezs open and expansive brand of football, when carried out correctly, produces moments like those witnessed on Saturday.Scintillating attacking football was served up at Goodison in front of a raucous crowd who demanded such a performance after their defeat to West Ham last week. Few, if any, would have been disappointed. Evertons cup campaign is in stark contrast to their form in the league - the Toffees are yet to concede a single goal in the FA Cup this season.Martinez even had the luxury of leaving John Stones on the bench until late on as Chelsea were kept at arms length. While Saturdays victory will have been welcomed, the 26 league goals conceded at Goodison continues to rile supporters, with Martinez in the firing line. Hell be hoping that defensive surety can be transferred to the Premier League. Also See: Lukaku double ousts United FA Cup news Fixtures Score Centre ' ' '
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Bartolo Colon watched Alex Rios foul pop fall into first baseman Brandon Moss mitt, looked back at his catcher and started the ceremonial high-five line that follows most victories. Been there, done that. At this point in Colons career, no need for excessive celebration. Colon tossed a five-hitter a week after turning 40, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox 3-0 on Friday night in a game that took only 2 hours, 14 minutes. "I feel proud to pitch the way that I did," Colon said in Spanish. Colon (6-2) struck out and three and walked none for his 11th career shutout. He has 34 complete games, third-most among active pitchers behind Roy Halladay (67) and CC Sabathia (35). He also became the first American League pitcher with a shutout after age 40 since Bostons Curt Schilling won 1-0 at Oakland on June 7, 2007, according to the As. "Theres still a little something in the tank," said As manager Bob Melvin, who never had a reliever throwing in the bullpen. "Hes always out to prove that he can be a successful pitcher at the major league level and he can still pitch as a power pitcher, which he does. Hell never tell you that, but the reason that hes had the lengthy career that hes had is that he never lets down." John Jaso was the first baserunner for either team to reach second when he doubled against Dylan Axelrod (3-4) leading off the eighth inning. Josh Reddick followed with an RBI double after coming off the disabled list before the game, and Coco Crisp added a two-run single to back Colons stellar start. Jaso said he realized Colons control was especially on target when he kept calling for the one spot on the pitching report not to throw to slugger Adam Dunn -- on the outer half of the plate -- and it worked so well. "It just showed the movement on his ball," Jaso said. "The guys eyes would light up because thats his pitch to hit, then it moves off the plate, but hes already committed to it." It was Colons first nine-inning shutout since leading the Yankees past the As 5-0 on May 30, 2011. He also pitched a rain-shortened three-hitter over seven innings against Boston on April 23. Colon, who received a 50-game suspension for a positive testosterone test last August and missed the playoffs for the AL West champions, looked as spry as ever on the mound in front of an announced crowd of 16,416 at the Oakland Coliseum. While the As struggled at the plate, Colon continued to pound the strike zone and challenge hitters. He threw 106 pitches -- 77 for strikes -- and hasnt walked a batter in eight of his 11 starts this season. "Hes a good one and it was fun," Axelrod said. "It seemed like both of us didnt have much rest on the benches. It was fun. He was out there for a few and then I was out there. I cant ask for anything more. It was just one of those things at the end there." For a while, it appeared the As might not give Colon any support. Axelrod retired his first eight batters until Eric Sogards single to right. Then he set down the next 12 before Seth Smiths two-out single in the seventh. Axelrod and Colon each relied on their defence, too, for several spectacular plays. Sogard backhanded a hard-hit grounder up the middle in the seventh and tossed the ball to shortstop Jed Lowrie, who fired it to first to complete a double play. Lowrie led off the top of the inning with a deep fly to right field, where Rios ran underneath the ball for a catch near the top of the wall. Reddick showed off the defensive skills that won him a Gold Glove last year when he made a running basket catch near the foul line for the first out of the eighth. Then he followed with his first hit since coming back, easily the biggest of the night. Axelrod, who had won his last three starts, was replaced by Matt Thornton following Reddicks double. Axelrod gave up four hits and struck out seven in seven-plus innings, walking slowly to the White Sox dugout afterward, sitting on the bench and putting his hands over his head. All the 27-year-old could do was marvel at Colon. "Hes doing everything he did for us last year -- throwing strikes and making contact where he can get outs," Reddick said. "Tonight it worked out really well for him." NOTES: As opening day starter Brett Anderson, on the DL since May 1 with a stress fracture in his right foot, played catch from one knee before the game. Discussions were held with all parties ahead of the replay, which will take place at the KC Stadium with a kick-off of 7pm. The teams played out a 0-0 draw at the Emirates last weekend.Talks had to be held due to the hectic fixture schedules of the clubs, with both challenging at the top of their respective divisions and Arsenal still involved in Champions League action. Arsene Wengers side now face four games in 11 days A statement on the FA website said it recognised this is not an ideal solution for everyone and called for football bodies to come together to resolve the overcrowded and untenable fixture schedule in the future. The re-arranged match could have serious repercussions for the Premier League title race as it means Arsenal face four key games in 11 days. They host Swansea on March 2 before travelling to White Hart Lane to play rivals Tottenham the following Saturday before their replay with Hull in midweek. West Brom then visit the Emirates on March 12, live on Sky Sports 1. It also means their game with Brentford set for March 8 has been postponed.A statement on the FA website said: It does strengthen the case for footballing bodies to work closely together in a positive, collaborative way to resolve the overcrowded and untenable fixture schedule. Joel Campbell of Arsenal takes a free kick saved by Eldin Jakupovic of Hull at the Emirates There was an option for a 5.dddddddddddd45pm kick off, however, the spirit of The FA Cup is strongly defined by the supporters and an earlier time would have significantly impacted on fans attendance. This was not a viable solution.FA chief executive Martin Glenn added: We want all of our clubs to be part of strong, vibrant domestic competitions, to perform well on the European stage and for the England team to be challenging for international honours. To have a better chance of achieving these aims more effectively, it is imperative we resolve the on-going problem of match scheduling together. We would like to thank UEFA for taking the time it has to understand our position on this matter. Eldin Jakupovic was excellent for Hull in the first tie Fixture scheduling is an issue for the whole game so lets build upon the productive conversations we have held with the Premier League and Football League and call upon UEFA to join the discussion to create clear, workable guidelines for the benefit of all. This will help our teams in the pursuit for trophies; enable fans to fully enjoy and access all the matches their teams participate in and allow broadcast partners to maximise the TV rights they have purchased. The winners of the replay will face Watford in the sixth round. FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- Adam Conley missed out on all those fun military-related activities with his Miami Marlins teammates. After all, he had a game to pitch. He wound up leaving Fort Bragg Field with the memory of a lifetime -- a victory in front of thousands of cheering troops.Conley pitched six strong innings and the Marlins beat the Atlanta Braves 5-2 on Sunday night in a game played in a temporary ballpark on a U.S. Army post.I know, for me, this has been my favorite place to ever pitch in my life, Conley said. This is the most memorable place Ive ever pitched. ... An absolute honor that it falls on my day and that I get to start here.J.T. Realmuto homered and drove in two runs and Christian Yelich also finished with two RBI. He and Realmuto had run-scoring singles during a two-run fifth.Martin Prado added an RBI single in the seventh to help the wild card-contending Marlins earn a split of the four-game series and win the first regular-season game -- in any sport -- held at an active military installation. This game was played at a ballpark built from scratch in less than four months at the sprawling Army post thats home to 55,000 service members, including the famed paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division.Conley (5-5) allowed four hits in the Marlins best outing by a starter in a week. In Miamis previous five games, each starter allowed at least four earned runs and none finished the sixth.Matt Wisler (3-8) had six strikeouts for the Braves, giving him 15 in his last two starts, but he allowed three earned runs in six-plus innings. It was just, two strikes, he couldnt put a guy away, interim Braves manager Brian Snitker said.Realmuto led off the ninth with a towering homer to center field off reliever Tyrell Jenkins to put the Marlins up 5-0.They pulled within 1 1/2 games of the NLs second wild card and improved to 4-8 against the last-place Braves -- a mark thats still their worst against an NL East opponent. Two of those wins belong to Conley, who threw eight innings in a 3-0 win over Atlanta on June 22 in Miami. The Braves scored two runs in the ninth off A.J. Ramos on Erick Aybars RBI double and A.J. Pierzynskis sacrifice fly before Ramos struck out Jace Peterson to end it.In a joint effort from Major League Baseball and the players association, an overgrown golf course was cleared out and transformed into a major league-caliber field surrounded by temporary stands that were packed by 12,582 service members -- most of whom cheered and chopped for the local favorite Braves. The bad part is, we lost the game, Snitker said. The good part is, its something Ill never forget the rest of my life.Looking rather comfortable in such a setting, Wisler breezed through the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth.Adeiny Hechavarria led off with a triple off the fence in center, then scored two batters later on Realmutos single to right that fell in front of a diving Nick Markakis. Prado then singled to center and Yelich followed with his RBI single to right that scored Realmuto.Prado made it 3-0 with his RBI single in the seventh and Yelich added a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Jenkins an inning later.HE SAID ITEarlier in the day, players from both teams took part in several military activities, including a parachute-packing exercise and some special operations that Pierzynski was asked about. His response: Were not allowed to tell you. Well have to kill you. Englands sensational victory over New Zealand will give them great heart for Sundays ICC World Twenty20 final, says Bob Willis. Eoin Morgans side crushed New Zealand by seven wickets with 17 balls left in the bank to move to within one win of emulating Englands title-winning campaign of 2010.The only blot was Morgans continued poor form - the captain falling for his second golden-duck of the tournament - but Willis says there are enough match-winners in the team to carry the skipper. Kumar Sangakkara and Michael Atherton discuss Englands semi-final win over New Zealand and the performance of Jason Roy It was sensational from start to finish, said Willis. I dont think Ive ever seen an England side play better in a one-day cricket match. It was unbelievable. To win a T20 match with two overs and five balls to go is a real drubbing and that must give England every confidence for Sunday.Eoins form with the bat has been very, very poor as it was during the 50-over World Cup but there are enough people around him performing that his failures havent really mattered so far.Just as when Alastair Cook was struggling in the one-day game, you dont want this run of form to go on for too long. Nasser Hussain called Englands World T20 semi-final win over New Zealand the complete performance Hopefully England will win on Sunday but Im sure that if they trip up and Eoin fails again, the searchlight will be on him.I dont see why England cant win on Sunday. Theyve adapted well and the old cliché is peak at the right time - dont play too well early in the tournament and England have got better and better. After that little hiccup against Afghanistan theyve played superbly against Sri Lanka and now New Zealand. Fingers crossed, theres no reason why they cant emulate the team in the West Indies two tournaments ago.Englands form bears no resemblance to that which undermined their 50-over World Cup campaign last year and Willis says that transformation is, in part, due to the faith shown in the players.Continuity of selection is important - you have to give the selectors some credit for sticking with these guys. Roy picked up the Man of the Match award after his 78 Clearly in this format you are going to have periods where you are going to get early and its going to look awful. But one thing the selectors and Trevor Bayliss have underlined is the athleticism in the field. Now that Plunkett has replaced Topley, these six bowlers work very well together and give Eoin Morgan some realistic options if someone disappears.Jordan has just got better and better in the white ball game and that just comes from confidence and being selected time after time. He just needs to improve his red ball bowling if hes going to be a factor in the Test team.Watch England in Sundays World Twenty20 Final live on Sky Sports 2 this Sunday from 1.30pm. Its going to be longer than we might have expected, so itts just going off the last conversation Ive had with Sam.dddddddddddd Its just important to go one day at a time and make sure we get him healthy. The Packers used Shields roster spot to acquire running back Knile Davis?in a trade from the Kansas City Chiefs.Shields had been making progress through the concussion protocol, McCarthy said recently. What I love most about running is that all you need to get started are your two feet and a heartbeat. Its one of the most travel-friendly sports since theres minimal gear to pack and you can check out the sights and sounds of a new city while getting in your cardio. But as Ive started running more (and as I enter my thirties), Ive begun to feel fatigue in my arches, calves and knees during and after my run. Ive stretched and massaged but realized it may be time to step up my gear beyond functional and fun sneakers -- its time to upgrade my socks as well.Compression gear functions as a base layer thats extra snug in specific areas. It supposedly helps increase blood flow and reduces lactic acid build-up -- which in turn could diminish my fatigue and speed up my post-run recovery. Ive worn other compression gear like leggings and shorts in the past, so when PRO Compression, a sock-specific company, sent me a few pairs, I was excited and curious to see if it could be the cure to my runners fatigue. The detailsThe socks I tested out were the PRO Compression Marathon Elite socks, the top-of-the-line model which retails for $55. They offer graduated compression, meaning the compression decreases as you move up the leg and closer to your heart. (The idea is that it helps push blood flow back towards the heart -- resulting in better circulation and an easier recovery from exercise.)The socks also have calf support and extra padding in the heel and toe for comfort on long runs. Theyre made of a blend of materials that are meant to wick sweat and smells. The testTo get the best overall impression of the socks I wore them during runs for a few months throughout the summer -- with shorts, under tights -- and in all kinds of weather. I wore a size small in the Marathon Elite socks and have a 5 ? shoe size. I also tried them out post-run and on recovery days.I have rather large calves and often have a problem finding socks that stay up, but these fit snugly -- as compression gear should. The material did seem to wick away sweat and the socks didnt slip down my calves no matter how hot it was or how hard I ran.I noticed that my arches felt more supported, which meant that I could wear more minimal running sneakers with less pain. It did seem like the tight fit made my calves feel oddly energized, but Im not sure if some of that was a placebo effect from wearing the socks.I was most impressed, though, with how the socks felt when worn during recovery. If I wore them post run (and shower), my calves felt hugged -- as though they were being massaged. They felt so good after one run that I wore the socks out to dinner because they felt too comfortable to take off.Worth it?At $55, these socks are priced right in the middle for compression running socks. Ive worn my pairs multiple times and theyve stood up to plenty of wear and washes. If you find yourself getting calf and foot fatigue or soreness from running -- or want to ease your recovery -- the PRO Compression socks are a decent, comfortable investment that Im happy to recommend. Smith realized how easily basketball can be taken from him, and he wasnt going to take his place in the NBA for granted anymore.Oscar has revealed to Sky Sports News HQ the extent of his frustration at a lack of playing time this season but insists he wants to stay at Chelsea and prove himself under new manager Antonio Conte. Its been very difficult for me, Oscar told Sky Sports News HQ. I had a great season last season, and Im coming from two or three seasons of doing well, but I was one of those players who got injured at the start of the season. Oscar has made 13 appearances of the bench this season When I came back, the team wasnt doing so well and I found myself on the bench and in and out of the first team. I didnt achieve the level I wanted to achieve but hopefully next season I can do better.[The new managers arrival] is great for the players. Obviously you have to prove yourself. Im sure the coach has been following all the players individually. Oscar is looking forward to proving himself under Antonio Conte next season It will be a breath of fresh air to the team and everyones excited to prove their worth to be here.dddddddddddd Obviously I havent been very happy because I havent been playing very much but, with the new coach coming in, its a fresh beginning for everyone.Doubts remain, however, over the future of Chelseas long-standing captain John Terry, who is out of contract in June, and has not been given any indication yet from the club that he is in line for an extension.Terry said on Tuesday that he still wants to stay at Stamford Bridge, while interim head coach Guus Hiddink believes the centre-back is worthy of a new deal, and Oscar also hopes the skipper will remain at the club.He said: His future is down to him and Chelsea to decide whats best. Obviously I want him to stay but its down to them.Hes a great leader and he has helped me ever since I arrived here. I like him very much but he will know whats best for his future and whatever he decides Ill be happy for him. So, that was pretty much a standard season for the Pittsburgh Penguins.Sidney Crosby had five points in October, they fired their coach and won 18 of 23 down the stretch under new head coach Mike Sullivan. Then, with a rookie goalie who had spent most of the season in the American Hockey League, they never looked back, beating the San Jose Sharks in six games to win their first Stanley Cup since 2009. As for Crosby? All he did was finish third in NHL scoring with 85 points and then dominate the playoffs at both ends of the ice en route to a Conn Smythe Trophy win as playoff MVP. He enters this season fresh from an MVP turn at the World Cup of Hockey, where Canada went undefeated and Crosby led all players in points. So, whats the problem? History. And history tells us that it really doesnt matter how good you are after winning it all, the rest of the field always catches the defending champion. No NHL team has won back-to-back championships since the Detroit Red Wings did so in 1997 and 1998. And history tells us its virtually impossible, even if youre as good as the Penguins. Are they any more poised to defy history? Well, thats part of the adventure of the coming season.Best new facesDoes goalie Matt Murray count as a new face? Murray, 22, will start the season on the injured reserve list but will push Marc-Andre Fleury for starts after Murray gets over his broken hand suffered playing for Team North America at the World Cup. Other than the departure of top-six defenseman Ben Lovejoy, who signed with the New Jersey Devils, the lineup will essentially be the same one that celebrated at the Shark Tank in San Jose after Game 6. While many Cup champions do turn over a big portion of their lineup, its worth noting the Penguins relied heavily on rookie forwards Tom Kuhnhackl, Conor Sheary and Bryan Rust throughout the playoffs, even though they had spent considerable time in the AHL last season. So in some ways, they too can be considered new faces. Defenseman Justin Schultz, obtained from the Edmonton Oilers before the deadline, and Trevor Daley, who came over from the Chicago Blackhawks midseason and then missed the latter part of the playoffs with a broken leg, count as new-but-not-new faces.Biggest unknownsHow does Phil Kessel rebound from a hand injury that bothered him in the playoffs? (Though he still finished with 22 points in 24 games). Can the rookies carry on their evolution after answering the call so ably in the playoffs? Can Brian Dumoulin continue his impressive ascendancy as a top-four defender? But no unknown will be more persistent than how GM Jim Rutherford handles his goaltending. The pressure is off to start the season with Murray on the shelf. But at some point, Rutherford is going to have to determine whether he rides out the season with Murray and the much-loved Fleury sharing time in the hopes the tandem can bring home a second straight Cup, even if it means potentially losing Fleury in the expansion draft in June. Or does Rutherford try to maximize the asset by moving Fleury midseason?Sure thingsIs there anything more sure than Crosby? Seems funny to think that people were prepared to write off Crosby after his tepid start to the season. Yet by the end of the playoffs, its fair to say he was playing as well as he ever had, his attention to detail unparalleled. He then followed up with a dominating performance at the World Cup. If there is one leader who might be able to coax a second straight championship out of this group, its Crosby. As for the way this team will play, thats a given too: fast. Dont expect Sullivan or the Pens to take their foot off the gas.PredictionThe Penguins are as close to a lock to go to the playoffs for the 11th straight season as any team, but that still might not be good enough to get them the Metropolitan Division title. LINCOLN, Neb. -- If Nebraskas Michael Rose-Ivey and teammates want to kneel during the national anthem again, their next opportunity will be the Nov. 5 game at Ohio State.Rose-Ivey, Mohamed Barry and DaiShon Neal each took a knee on the sideline as the anthem was sung at Northwestern last week. Their action sparked statewide debate about whether it was an appropriate setting for their protest of police violence and racial injustice, and Rose-Ivey will meet with the states governor next week to discuss the issue. But teams are in the locker room during the anthem at Nebraskas Memorial Stadium, so the next time the Huskers are in a game where players are on the field as it plays will be when they go to Ohio.Unlike in the NFL, where players are on the field for the anthem, the common practice in college football is for teams to be in their locker rooms. Just a handful of schools send teams onto the field for the anthem, limiting the opportunity for the movement to spread as it has in the pros.David Witty, who oversees game presentation as Nebraskas senior associate athletic director for marketing and communications, said for as long as anyone in his department can remember, teams have been in the locker room during the anthem in Lincoln. The only exception was the first game following the 9/11 attacks. At Nebraska, the band plays the anthem on the field and then forms a corridor for the team to run through at the completion of the Tunnel Walk. The tradition started in 1994, with the team shown on the video boards as it exits the locker room and walks through the tunnel to the field as the Alan Parsons Projects instrumental piece Sirius plays. Many schools use smoke machines and other mechanisms as part of their pregame routines to get the team and the crowd fired up. To pause a couple minutes after a dramatic team entry could be a buzzkill. With our whole pregame atmosphere and Tunnel Walk, theres just never been any kind of talk about changing it, Witty said.In the Big Ten, eight of the 14 schools have the teams on the field for the anthem. All Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference teams are in their locker rooms during the anthem before home games. Boston College and Pittsburgh are the only Atlantic Coast Conference teams that are on the field for the antheem at home games.ddddddddddddost schools are wise enough not to play the national anthem while players are on the field, Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said. I concur with that; always have.Big Ten teams Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Nebraska, Penn State and Wisconsin are in their locker rooms during the anthem at home games; Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue and Rutgers are on the field. The anthem protests started in August, with San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick taking a knee before preseason games. Other professional and amateur athletes followed by kneeling or otherwise protesting to call attention to unfair treatment of blacks in the United States.Protests came to the fore in college games after a week that had riots in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the killing of an unarmed black man in Tulsa, Oklahoma.Michigan State players Delton Williams, Kenney Lyke and Gabe Sherrod held their right fists in the air while standing on the sideline in East Lansing; Michigan Wolverines Khalid Hill, Mike McCray, Devin Bush, Elysee Mbem-Bosse and Jourdan Lewis did the same before their game in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines have been on the field for the anthem since 9/11, and spokesman David Ablauf said they request the visiting team do so as well. Ablauf said most have agreed.Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said the team has discussed social issues in meetings, but no player has approached him about staging an anthem protest.Buckeyes quarterback JT Barrett said he doesnt see himself protesting but wouldnt have a problem with a teammate who did.The main concept behind it is just shedding light on an issue thats happening in our home, the United States, Barrett said. Its a real issue. I think thats all (Kaepernick) is trying to do, just shed light on it and let people realize that this is whats happening and we can change it. It takes everybody, too, and I think thats the main thing hes trying to get at.---AP Sports Writers Dave Skretta in Manhattan, Kansas, and Mitch Stacy in Columbus, Ohio, contributed to this report.---Online:AP college football website: http://collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- After beginning their college careers on losing teams, Tennessees seniors would love nothing more than to finish up by playing for a Southeastern Conference championship. Those seniors still hope to reach that goal as they prepare for their final college home game Saturday against Missouri (3-7, 1-5 SEC).That would mean everything, defensive end Corey Vereen said.In order to get to Atlanta for a shot at the title, Tennessee (7-3, 3-3) must win its final two games and have No. 16 LSU defeat No. 21 Florida on Saturday. Tennessee plays at Vanderbilt next week in its regular-season finale.Tennessee isnt in control of its destiny, but the fact the Vols are even in contention for a division title in mid-November shows how far this program has come since these seniors enrolled.Theyve made a lasting impact on Tennessee football, Tennessee coach Butch Jones said. We always talk about is Tennessee football better because you were a part of it. How have you impacted the football program? All these individuals have impacted the football program in a very, very positive manner. This senior class includes the first collection of players Jones recruited to Tennessee as well as four players who preceded the coachs arrival in Knoxville. Linebacker Kenny Bynum, tight end Jason Croom, defensive end LaTroy Lewis and defensive lineman Charles Folger are the lone fifth-year seniors who were part of Derek Dooleys last Tennessee team.Dooley was fired amid a 5-7 season in 2012. Jones and the other freshmen came aboard in 2013 when Tennessee again finished 5-7 for its fourth straight losing season.Tennessee went 7-6 in 2014 and 9-4 last season while winning bowl games each year. This season, the Vols were ranked as high as ninth before a three-game skid in October caused them to tumble out of the Top 25.The headline performers in this class are quarterback Joshua Dobbs, cornerback Cam Sutton and linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin.Dobbs has made 32 career starts while majoring in aerospace engineering. His accomplishments on and off the field have made him the face of Tennessees program.A lot of people said you cant go to college, cant play SEC football and major in engineering, (that) theres just not enough time in the day, Dobbs said. You cant do this and you cant do that. ... My message always has been, `Why cant I do that? Sutton, a starter since the opening game of his freshman season, is Tennessees career leader in passes defended and returned to action last week after missing six games with a fractured ankle. Reeves-Maybin led the Vols in tackles in 2015 and tied for the team lead in 2014 before season-ending shoulder surgery limited him to just four games this year.Tennessees fifth-year seniors encountered even more adversity as they dealt with consecutive losing seasons and a coaching change in their first two years on campus. They marvel at how much has happened since their arrival. We remember when we just moved into Gibbs (Hall), me and Jason were roommates together, Lewis said. We look over across the street and Gibbs is gone (it was demolished in 2014). Its a whole new building up. How things have changed over time, its really interesting to look back on.Those four fifth-year seniors have only made a combined seven starts this season, but theyve delivered quite an impact off the field. Lewis has started a local nonprofit organization aimed at mentoring and educating young people in the Knoxville area, while Folger volunteers at the Tennessee School for the Deaf in Knoxville.Tennessees seniors acknowledge Saturdays game will carry an emotional weight. Folger quipped that Im going to cry like a baby when he runs onto Neyland Stadiums field for the last time and is greeted by his family. But they dont want to get too nostalgic just yet. Theres too much at stake. We still have a lot of dreams and goals on the table, Dobbs said. We cant get caught up in too much of the emotion and be focused on this being our last (home) game. Weve still got to prepare and get ready to play a ballgame Saturday.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25---Follow Steve Megargee at www.twitter.com/stevemegargeeJoe Staley Jersey .com) - The women will also have a new champion at the Australian Open. AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Maurice Cheeks is ready for a new challenge, undaunted by the fact that the Detroit Pistons have been a revolving door for coaches lately. Cheeks is the franchises fourth coach in six seasons, so is he concerned about a job where so many others have failed? "If we thought like that, nobody would be coaching," Cheeks said. Cheeks was introduced Thursday, nearly two months after Lawrence Frank was fired. The coaching search took a while because the Pistons need this decision to work out. Detroit went 54-94 in two seasons under Frank amid sagging attendance. The previous two seasons under John Kuester werent any better. The Pistons havent made the playoffs since being swept in the first round in 2009 -- in Michael Currys only season at the helm. Cheeks is Detroits ninth coach since the 1999-2000 season. "We wanted to make sure we took our time and went through as many possible scenarios as weve come across," team president Joe Dumars said. "We feel like we got the right guy for what were trying to do." This is the third head coaching stop for Cheeks. He went 284-286 with the Portland Trail Blazers and Philadelphia 76ers. Cheeks coaching tenure in Portland is perhaps best remembered for a heartwarming moment when he rushed to the rescue of a 13-year-old girl who forgot the words to the national anthem before a game. But hes never been past the first round of the playoffs. "Everything you go through is a learning experience," Cheeks said. "Im here to make my own way, put my own stamp on this team. It has nothing to do with Philadelphia or Portland." Detroit drafted Greg Monroe, Brandon Knight and Andre Drummond in the lottery the last three years, and the Pistons have the No. 8 pick this year. Theyve been able to build a nucleus of young players with potential, but Detroit has lacked a legitimate star who could lift the team into the post-season and help draw fans. This off-season is an important one for Dumars after the team cleared salary cap space by trading veterans Ben Gordon and Tayshaun Prince in the last year.dddddddddddd "This team has a lot of young talent," Cheeks said. "You go across the board, and youve got players that just have to be honed." Jonas Jerebko, a 26-year-old forward whose playing time dipped last season, was at Thursdays news conference. "Hes going to demand respect, and thats something we need," Jerebko said. "I feel like hes a great fit for our young team." Jerebko said he was shooting around with a couple other players earlier Thursday when Cheeks tried to set the tone for the future. "I had a couple flip-flops on or something -- you know, messing around," Jerebko said. "He told us: When youre in there, youve got to put in work. ... Thats what you want as a player -- you want somebody to tell you what to do. I wont be wearing my flip-flops out there." Cheeks spent the past four seasons as an Oklahoma City Thunder assistant. The Chicago native was a four-time All-Star over 15 seasons in the NBA, helping the Sixers win a championship in 1983. Next season will mark the 10-year anniversary of Detroits championship in 2004. Since then, the team has parted ways with the stars from that team, and the Pistons also have a fairly new owner. Tom Gores took over the franchise two years ago. Hall of Famer Phil Jackson helped with Detroits coaching search as a consultant, but Dumars said there was "a 100 per cent consensus" to hire Cheeks. Dumars is the teams most obvious link to its more successful past, and he acknowledges that no matter how many changes the team makes, fans will take a wait-and-see approach until the Pistons start winning again. "I think people are always skeptical until you prove yourself," Dumars said. "Im not here to try and prove to people in the press conference that everything is perfect. What I am saying, though, is were not going to stop working until we get it right. I think thats all you can do in this position." ' ' '
BALTIMORE -- Rick Porcello and the Boston Red Sox appear poised to extend their late-season charge deep into October.Porcello pitched a four-hitter for his major league-high 21st victory, David Ortiz and Mookie Betts hit two-run homers and Boston beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 on Monday night to pad its lead in the AL East.Coming off a four-game sweep of the Yankees, the Red Sox extended their surge in the opener of an important four-game series for both clubs. Boston has won 10 of 13 and stands atop the division by a season-high four games. Its never over until its over, but were definitely going to try to increase the gap between us and them, Porcello said.Adam Jones homered and Mark Trumbo picked up his 102nd RBI for the second-place Orioles, who started the day with a one-game lead over Toronto for the top AL wild card.Weve got three more here against (the Red Sox), Baltimores Manny Machado said. Well just put it on a track where we need to be.Bostons goal over the next three days will be to put away the Orioles for good. Were going to try, Ortiz said.Porcello (21-4) struck out seven and walked none in his third complete game of the year. Five days earlier against Baltimore, the right-hander gave up one run in eight innings but took the loss.In this one, he threw only 89 pitches -- 65 in the strike zone. When its his day on the mound, he sets the tone for us, manager John Farrell said. Did once again.Porcello has allowed three runs or fewer in 11 straight starts and is sure to receive strong consideration for the AL Cy Young Award after going 9-15 last year. All of us are honored to be mentioned for those awards, he said. But Ive been saying it all year, our focus is winning and what we want to accomplish as a team.Playing his final regular-season series in Baltimore, the 40-year-old Ortiz connected against rookie Dylan Bundy (9-6) with a man on in the fifth for a 5-1 lead. It was his 35th home run of the season and the 53rd of his career against the Orioles. When he finally walks away from the game, Ortiz will certainly miss taking his cuts at Camden Yards.Yeah, man, its just super nice. I like it, he said, especially when its warm like it is.Betts put Boston up 2-0 with his 31st homer in the third. It was his eighth home run in seven games at Camden Yards -- most in a season by a Red Sox in a visiting ballpark since Jimmie Foxx hit eight in St. Louis in 1939.Porcello retired the first 11 batters before hitting Machado with a pitch in the fourth. Trumbo followed with an RBI double. The Red Sox responded with a three-run fifth. Dustin Pedroia snapped an 0-for-12 skid with a run-scoring single before Ortiz launched a 1-1 pitch over the 25-foot scoreboard in right field.Jones homered in the eighth, his 28th.TRAINERS ROOMRed Sox: RHP Steven Wright (shoulder) has started a throwing program at the teams spring training facility in Fort Myers, Florida, but Farrell did not give an estimated date for his return. SAN FRANCISCO -- The New York Mets welcomed back outfielder Justin Ruggiano for the series opener against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night. They liked what they saw so much, manager Terry Collins is planning to bring back two more injured players Friday.Left fielder Yoenis Cespedes (strained right quad) and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (strained left knee) are expected to be reinstated from the 15-day disabled list in time for the Mets rematch with the Giants after San Francisco took the series opener 10-7 Thursday.Cespedes missed the minimum 15 days, while Cabrera last played for the Mets on July 31.The Mets third loss in four games on their road trip Thursday came despite the efforts of Ruggiano, who had three hits, including a grand slam off Giants ace left-hander Madison Bumgarner.Bumgarner extracted a measure of revenge against the Mets, however, belting a home run of his own to aid in a Giants comeback that helped produce the win.The homer came off Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom, who shared the marquee with Bumgarner in what was billed as a pitchers duel in the series opener.I dont think thats how either of us had it drawn up, Bumgarner said the 12 combined runs scored off the two starting pitchers. But well take it for sure.At least Bumgarner and deGrom walked away healthy. The same couldnt be said Thursday of Giants right-hander Matt Cain, who had to go on the disabled list because of a sore lower back, and Mets lefty Steven Matz, who was scratched from his scheduled Friday start because of a sore shoulder. That leaves Mets rookie right-hander Seth Lugo (0-1, 2.65 ERA) to make his first major league start against the National Leagues All-Star Game starter, Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto (13-3, 2.97 ERA).Its a hole to fill, Collins said of losing Matz, who is being pointed toward keeping his spot in the rotation next week. Right now, Seth Lugos going to be the guy.Lugo has made nine relief appearances for the Mets, and he has demonstrated an uncanny ability to get left-handed hitters out. They are batting just .130 (3-for-23) against him.The Giants got eight hits from lefty hitters in Thursdays barrage on deGrom. The win allowed the Giants (67-54) to move seven games ahead of the Mets (60-61) in the National League wild-card race.San Francisco has won just two of seven on its current homestand, but the hometown fans are starting to see the club swing the bats better. The 10-run total Thursday was the Giants highest since a 12-run tally against the Oakland Athletics on June 30.The club has totaled 36 runs in its past six games.Cueto, meanwhile, hasnt won since July 6, a six-game stretch in which he has gone 0-2 with a 4.84 ERA. The Giants lost four of the six contests.Cueto has been particularly off his game in three August starts, during which he owns a 5.59 ERA without getting a decision. The ERA is the third worst in all of baseball among unbeaten pitchers in August who have made three or more starts, trailing only the Colorado Rockies Chad Bettis (6.43) and the Texas Rangers Lucas Harrell (6.17). NEW YORK -- Billy Bean has come full circle, throwing out the first pitch for the first Mets Pride Night on Saturday against his former San Diego team.Bean came out as gay after he left the Padres in 1995. Now hes Major League Baseballs vice president for social responsibility and inclusion. In the past two years, hes talked to all 30 MLB ownership groups, various teams and players about struggling with his sexuality during his career and gay and lesbian inclusion in the workplace. The message is everyone is welcome that walks through the turnstiles to watch us play baseball, Bean said. The LGBT community is part of every community.Mets general manager Sandy Alderson approached Bean after he heard him speak to GMs in 2014. Since then, the former outfielder who had a six-year career with Detroit, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Padres has participated in spring training, spoken with players and thrown batting practice. Hes helped former teammate and Mets coach Tommy Goodwin with the outfielders.(Alderson) wanted them to know about me, said Bean, who grew up in Santa Ana, California. My dad is a Marine Corps veteran, like Sandy. I grew up in a big family, very conservative. Lot of things that were explanations of why I chose to leave baseball as opposed to talk about what was going on with me.The Mets are among 10 teams hosting Pride Nights this season, and the first among the four New York mens major pro sports to host the theme night. A portion of ticket sales will go to the LGBT Network, which promotes anti-bullying programs in the New York area. Here are some things to know about Bean, who also talks to people in the front office, instructional leagues and minor leagues.---LIFE SKILLS: Bean says his job is to help younger players from all backgrounds and cultures understand workplace expectations. A lot of people forget our players are 19, 20, 21 years old, he said. Theyre world class baseball players, and they havent had time to learn all the ways of the world. We really prioritize messaging on life skills, domestic violence awareness and counseling about relationships. The inclusive conversation is a wonderful part of that comprehensive message.Bean says the comments in the clubhouse that everybodys been hearing for the last 500 years will take time and education to reduce. It was acceptable to be disparaging. When guys are ragging other guys, they feminize them. The comments were sexist as much as they were homophobic.---TOUGH LESSONS: Bean says he quit baseball without talking to one person about why. I had never come out to my family, I was living a very secretive, dark life, he said. My partner died of HIV-related causes on the eve of what was my last season.Brad Ausmus, the current Detroit Tigers manager, was Beans teammate and friend. He says Ausmus and his wife talk about how things might have changed if I just would have told him. He would have said, `Dont stop playing or just tell your parents or dont tell your parents, just talk to us.I didnt realize there was a place for me in this world, and I didnt even trust the people that loved me the most -- my own family.Alderson was part of the Oakland organization when Glenn Burke, the first MLB player to publicly acknowledge he was gay, played for the Dodgers (1976-78) and Athletics (1978-79). Burke left the majors after receiving little playing time with the As. He died at 42 of complications from AIDS in 1995.---PROGRESS: Milwaukee Brewers minor league first baseman David Denson became the first active player in affiliated professional baseball to come out in August 2015. He will likely win American League Pitcher of the Month honors for July after going 6-0 with a 1.78 ERA in six starts. The As traded Rich Hill to the Dodgers, though Hill is currently on the disabled list with a blister on his finger. Hill is 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA in 14 starts, having missed all of June with a groin injury.Angels general manager Billy Eppler told MLB.com the trade of Santiago was more about what they were getting than what they were giving up. Los Angeles acquired veteran pitcher Ricky Nolasco, but the key to the trade was pitcher Alex Meyer, a highly-regarded pitching prospect.I think for us to get to where we are now to where we want to go, we have to take a little more of a risk than the play-it-safe type, Eppler added. Alex Meyer represents that. He has an extraordinary ceiling of potential that we hope to be able to harness and reap the rewards of.For the As, knowing that Hill -- along with outfielder Josh Reddick, also traded to the Dodgers for a package of minor leaaguers -- will be free agents at the end of the season played a part in making the deal.ddddddddddddIts tough, As pitcher Sonny Gray told the San Francisco Chronicle. But you know its going to happen one way or another, either theyre going to try to get guys or get rid of guys. Everyone knows its coming, at least. The Angels also traded Joe Smith, their best set-up man in the bullpen the last few years, though he recently had been replaced by Cam Bedrosian for the eight-inning spot.Smith, eligible for free agency at end of the season, went to the Cubs for pitching prospect Jesus Castillo. The Angels and As open the series Tuesday tied for last place in the American League West and are hoping to at least finish strong.Matt Shoemakers name popped up in trade discussions as well, but he instead will make the start for the Angels on Tuesday. His record of 5-11 is a bit misleading, considering his ERA of 4.17 is actually better than Santiagos.Shoemaker has had some outstanding performances this season. He shut out Baltimore on three hits over 7 1/3 innings on May 21, then silenced Cleveland on three hits over eight frames on June 11.Most recently, Shoemaker threw a shutout against the Chicago White Sox on July 16.Sean Manaea, 3-5 with a 4.57 ERA in 15 games (14 starts), will start for Oakland.
