Japans Hideki Matsuyama parred the fourth extra hole to clinch an unlikely play-off victory over American Rickie Fowler at the Phoenix Open on Sunday. Matsuyama went birdie-birdie over the final two holes of regulation at TPC Scottsdale to force the play-off as he and Fowler had matching 67s for a 14-under-par 270, two strokes clear of American Harris English. Final Leaderboard Phoenix Open Fowler had a two shot lead on the 17th tee of the final round, but he was to rue opting for the driver instead of his three wood. His ball hit the down slope at the short par four and ended up in the water for the eighth time in his career on this hole. A bogey for Fowler and a birdie for Matsuyama had them tied on 14-under-par heading down the last. Two good drives down the fairway, and it was Rickie who looked to have the advantage as the American hit his ball to around six feet. A confident long putt from Matsuyama forced Fowler to make a clutch putt of his own to force the play-off. Matsuyama holed a long putt on the final hole to force a play-off with Fowler They opened the sudden death play-off by playing the par-four 18th twice, matching each other first with par and then birdie, before continuing at the par-four 10th.A wayward drive from Fowler in to the rough on the third play-off hole put the world number four on the back foot, and he followed up his bad drive by sculling his second through the green.Mastuyama, whose drive was comfortably on the fairway, was unable to exploit Fowlers mistake and saw his own effort fly past the hole to the back of the green. They pair both managed pars to send the match to a fourth play-off hole. Fowler hit his drive in to the water nine times on the 17th of TPC Scottsdale during his career The play-off finally ended at the par-four 17th, where Fowler drove into a water hazard for the second time in barely an hour and could not save par. Despite taking his three-wood, Fowler knew it was off-line from the start and after a lackluster chip his par putt rolled past the right hand side of the hole.Matsuyama had the luxury of two-putting from five feet for his second victory on the PGA Tour, following the 2014 Memorial. Wales are hopeful British and Irish Lions wing George North will be able to prove his fitness for Northampton Saints this weekend.North forms part of a worrying Wales injury list ahead of their opening autumn international against Australia in Cardiff on Nov. 5.Scarlets trio Liam Williams, Jake Ball and Scott Williams are also fitness doubts for Rob Howleys return in charge with Warren Gatland on Lions leave ahead of next summers tour of New Zealand.North damaged a hand during Northamptons European Champions Cup defeat to Castres last weekend, but the Wales management have been told the 24-year-old could feature in the Saints Aviva Premiership clash with Gloucester on Friday. Were in dialogue with the Saints and he [North] is working hard to be fit for the weekend, Wales forwards coach Robin McBryde said.Fullback Williams (ankle) and lock forward Ball (rib) both picked up injuries in the Scarlets Champions Cup defeat at Saracens on Saturday.Centre Williams withdrew ahead of that game with an ankle problem.Liam hasnt been ruled out of the Australia match yet, were working hard with the medics to see how he reacts to that, McBryde said. The same goes for Jake with his rib injury. Its pretty sore and its quite hard to determine how long theyre going to take. The same can be said for Scott but hes back running and training.Taulupe Faletau definitely misses the Australia game with a knee injury, but Wales are confident the Bath No. 8 will play some part in an autumn series which also features games against Argentina, Japan and South Afrrica.dddddddddddd.Meanwhile, McBryde welcomed Premiership Rugbys decision to release players for international matches on Nov. 5.The Premiership do not usually release non-English players for matches outside the official World Rugby international window, but on Monday they agreed to do so for the weekend of Nov. 4-6 -- describing the one-off move as a gesture of flexibility.England-based quintet North, Jamie Roberts, Luke Charteris, Ross Moriarty and Tomas Francis are all now available for the Australia game and will join up with the squad on Monday. Its a positive, McBryde said. Its great news for us because that means we can have a weeks good preparation with players who will hopefully be involved in that first game.It also highlights that players are in the worst position, the tug of war that exists between international and club rugby. But anything to make a players life any easier [is good].Everyone is aware we play a load of rugby and we have got one of the smallest playing bases.Weve got to look after what we have and do that better than other countries who perhaps have got quite a bit of depth.McBryde also confirmed that some players would be released back to the Welsh regions this weekend. There has been disquiet in Wales over the scheduling of Guinness PRO12 derby fixtures between the Cardiff Blues and Scarlets and Ospreys and Newport-Gwent Dragons on the eve of the first autumn international.
